The Abbe refractometer derives its name from the 19th Century physicist and father of modern
optical technology, Ernst Abbe (1840-1905).He was the co-founder of the Carl Zeiss
Jena Optical Company and Schott Glasswerk.
Abbe designed an instrument for measuring dispersion which became the precursor for a
refractometer - the so-called Abbe refractometer.
Bellingham & Stanley manufactures the "abbe 60" range of highly developed refractometers
which includes direct reading and high accuracy models, and customised instruments for
specific application.
Abbe 60 Direct Reading Refractometer
The ABBE60 direct reading models, are available with three measuring range.
They can be used with a white light source.
The working temperature range for these instruments is from +5 and 75°C.
Instruments come complete with thermometer, standardisation plate and contact liquid,
scale illuminator, spare illuminator lamp, power supply, plastic dust cover and instruction for
use.
Model | Brix (%) | Refractive Index |
60/70 | 0-95 ±0.5 | 1.30-1.70 X 0.001 |
60/74 | Not available | 1.30-1.74 X 0.001 |

High Accuracy Range of Abbe 60 Refractometer
The high accuracy models are designed for use with monochromatic light sources.
With good temperature control and use of the micrometer vernier scale, an average accuracy
through the range to ±0.00004 RI is achievable.
Temperature control can be achieved by the use of waterbath and circulator.
Sodium D line (589.6 nm) tables are supplied as standard; other wavelengh conversion tables
are available on request.
The Abbe 60/ED conforms to ASTM D1218standard for oil measurement.
Instruments come complete with thermometer, traceable standardisation plate and contact liquid, scale illuminator, spare illuminator bulb, power supply, sodium D line calibration tables, plastic dust cover and instruction for use.
Models | Refractive Index Equivalent |
60/ED | 1.30-1.74 approximately |
60/HR | 1.36-1.86 approximately |
60/LR | 1.20-1.70 approximately |
